Freshly Painted Pulp Figures

I just received around 30 pulp figures back from Doc Merkury who did a great job painting these for me. I am currently going through the finishing process and will post pics when they are done. I really like how the Ogre companion came out.

Where Heroes Dare! With A Science Fiction Spin

One of the designers of Where Heroes Dare! has been working on a science fiction version and he took the time to host a game. His table was awesome and the game was a lot of fun. Like WHD!, the game is about creating a story line and major characters are often just captured when they fall instead of dying. Pre-painted Star Wars figures work well for this game and that is what we used.

The Republic forces landed in an attempt to determine if General Grievous was building some kind of secret weapon, but instead are caught in a trap and have to try to escape. Obi-wan manages to escape but is forced to leave Anakin behind when he falls to become General Grievous' prisoner.

Where Heroes Dare Character Sheet

I wanted a way to store all my pulp heroes and villains for Where Heroes Dare! in some kind of file format that would allow me to edit the characters later if needed and I also wanted to be able to put some kind of character picture on the sheet as well. MS Excel was not my first choice, but as it turns out, it worked well. When I entered all the data for the combo boxes I included the rule book page numbers because I always spend too much time looking up specific rules and I think that detail will really help.

If anyone would like to use this, I have uploaded it to MediaFire here. There are two character sheets per page and you can make copies of the blank character sheet tab to store more heroes and villains in the workbook. Enjoy.

Edit: I found an error in the workbook. Here is a new link.

Pulp Figures Re-Based

My first completed goal of 2010 is G14 Re-Base Pulp Figs. The last few months have been full of life's little surprises and the coming months are expected to be the same, so gaming and goal progress have been left behind a little, but not completely. With Doc Merkury's help and a little midnight oil I have managed to make significant progress on some of the bigger goals for this year. I comissioned Doc Merkury to paint my late war German platoon and he has already returned them to me painted and I have mounted them all on bases. All that is left to do is finish the bases and apply a dull coat and that goal will be completed as well. To be honest that was the one goal I was worried about the most. Several other goals have seen limited progress and I expect to finish the year with everything at 100%.
Between now and the end of the year I have a major home renovation planned which includes dismantling my current gaming and work space, but if everything goes as planned I will gain a purpose built gaming space that should never have to be moved for any reason barring disaster or work relocation.
I hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to reading everyone's blogs when I get a few minutes in the evening. Take care and happy gaming :-)

New Pulp Vehicles

A few weeks ago one of the NL Wargamer group members told me about a local place that sells Matchbox Models of Yesteryear vehicles for around $5 each. I went over and looked through the easy access boxes and chose a few models. I grabbed a 1927 Talbot Van, 1930 Ford "A" and a 1928 Bugatti Type 44. I will have to go back and grab a few more. Apparently the remaining boxes were not easy to get at when I was there.

Fang's Flight From Justice

I finally got to play Where Heroes Dare! over at Six Feet Under Games. Seven of us played while Doc M presided. The forces of good were the Communist Chinese, Interpol and Michael's Co-Prosperity Sphere. The forces of evil were Kong Fang, The Cult of Al, Zepplin Pirates and Natives. The object of the game (at least initially) was for each side to locate "the goods" and use one of two sea planes to make a getaway. The goods could be located at one of several Dare locations including the four trucks placed toward the center of the board.

Board Layout.

The Cult of Al and the Natives disperse toward the dare locations in search of the goods.

Kong Fang and his giant mechanical menace make a b-line toward the Communist Chinese ahead in the woods .

The Interpol group heads toward a sea plane.

By now the Interpol group has made it to the far sea plane and started the engine. Shortly after that the Communist Chinese find the goods in a wooded area and things start looking desperate for the evil faction. Apparently things were not well between the Interpol and the Communist Chinese because the Interpol group saw fit to leave without the goods or any other faction.

Apparently things weren't good between Kong Fang and the Cult of Al either because the Communist Chinese and Kong Fang allied and the lumbering menace made his way toward the Natives and the Cult of Al.

Kong Fang's robot tried to use its mind ray eyes on the Cult of Al and experienced a catastrophic failure causing an explosion and the loss of the weapon. This didn't stop it from continuing to crush things though.

While the Cult of Al tried to deal with the robot, the natives didn't take well to betrayal and charged Kong Fang in the woods trying to make his way to the plane with the goods.

At this point it was 9 pm and the store was closing soon so the game was called. The natives disolved Kong Fangs forces in the woods leaving a tenuous situation. Team play had been abandoned and it was every gang for themselves . The ending could have gone several ways, but we'll never know exactly how it all ended. Maybe the stories will be told in a future adventures ...

An excellent introduction for me to these fast play rules with infinite possibility. I look forward to the next game. :-)

My New Docks Have Arrived

After seeing Doctor Merkury's docks and how well they worked in his pulp games, I needed some too. He found his at a hardware store (I think) after Christmas one year on sale and got a great deal on them. The brand name is Lemax and after looking at about a half dozen different places that sell this type of stuff this year and every year since (and not finding any) I decided to purchase them from the internet. I ended up with 7 pieces which should cover any 'down at the docks' pulp scenarios and several others that come to mind as well. I think they look great!

Skulls & Barrels & Chests Oh My Or What I have Been Working on the Past Two Weeks

A couple of weeks ago I needed something to work on that I could do while on the road. Miniatures don't do well for me on the road, but the boxes, crates, doors, skulls and sacks I had cast from my Hirst Arts molds would fit the bill. I only got snippets of time here and there, but I just put the final dull coat on today and here they all are. All of this stuff is for my dungeon layout, but a good bit can be used in many other games including Where Heroes Dare!

Where Heroes Dare! Encounter Miniatures

With the release of Iron Ivan's 'Where Heroes Dare!', I have been trying to gather together various components of the game. I'm a little behind on painted character models and vehicles because pulp gaming is fairly new for me, but while reading the rule book I noted that I already have many of the encounter miniatures as well as a pool for more fantastic encounters from my D&D Minis collection. Below are pictures of those encounter miniatures I have dug out of my D&D Minis collection and more are certainly possible given the varied and extensive playscape of pulp gaming. I also found an 'Egyptian Toob' from Michael's I had laying around. Maybe these examples will spark further ideas in my contemporaries or at least expose them to another source of pulp gaming pieces.

Clockwise From Bottom Left: Large Rat, Rat Swarm, Goblins (Pygmies), Bat, Werewolf, Horse, Bat, Wild Cat, Komodo Dragon, Badger and Spider Swarm.

Clockwise From Bottom Left: Large Hawk, Large Lion, Panther, Large Tiger, Large Spider #1, Large Spider #2

Clockwise From Bottom Left: Scarab Beetle Swarm, Large Serpent, Large Cobra, Large Centipede and Snake Swarm

Clockwise From Bottom Left: Cat Man and Cultists x 3

Clockwise From Bottom Left: Large Robot, Shambler, Robot

These just look like something guarding a tomb or maybe something that comes alive in a museum.

Egyptian Toob from Michael's. These items look like something from the Cairo Museum.
